A quick look at the phenomena “remix”

Posted by nicklas on February 25, 2009

It’s not a new thing, nor a trend - modern remixing has its roots in the dance hall culture from Jamaica in the 1960s and 1970s. It’s just that I see so many places now a days - there are remixes here and remixes there - not only in music, but also in film, literature, and product development (ref. Sprite Remix).

Remixing has become a phenomena - or should we say norm? It has become a tool to engage people, a way to express creativity, and just the way people expect things to be. It’s done under semi-controlled circumstances, kind of like remix.nin.com, which is Nine Inch Nails’ interactive web community for creating, sharing, and listening to Nine Inch Nails remixes.

It’s also used for commercial purposes - like the Sony Bravia campaign , the Cadbury Gorilla, and the Chevrolet Tahoe campaign (which quite didn’t work out the way Chevrolet wanted…).

But it is the “un-controlled” remixing that is the most common (and fun), just do a normal search on YouTube for whatever you like and then type in remix and you will most likely get plenty of other options. Here is a personal favorite, the original and a couple of remixes.

Trial against the Pirate Bay

Posted by nicklas on February 19, 2009

The much talked about trial against the Pirate Bay has been going on for almost a full week now.

Besides being very interesting for the future of file sharing and copyright laws - it is quite fascinating to look at the way the trial is being followed by media. Of course the traditional media are reporting in their usual way. You can for instance read about in all major newspapers, hear about it on radio, watch it on the TV news or check it out on Internet - the usual media coverage. You also have the opportunity to listen to the trial live on Swedish radio and follow it on www.svt.se, and that also goes for the hearing impaired…

And since we are all living in a digital world, where the consumer has taken control - people can of course air their own opinions in different chat forums around the web.

I guess this is pretty much a normal news coverage of an important trial, the interesting part is what the people behind Piratey Bay are doing. They are just not gonna sit back and let the media report whatever angle they find interesting.

The Pirate Bay is actually taking an active part in spreading information - from their point of view & in their own style. They have even ”branded” the trial and call it “spectrial”  (which of course is a home made blend of the words spectacle and trial)

So, if you are keen on following the trial, from a different perspective. You can check out the official trial web site made by the Pirate Bay - here.

Video clip. Pirate Bay meets with press…? ;-)

You can also get updates on the trial through Twitter and Bloggy - enjoy.

Naked Sverige med “flygande start”

Posted by nicklas on February 03, 2009
