Michelle Lee at our New York office has written a short, but interesting piece on social media, people and brands.

YOUR MOM’S ON TWITTER

By Michelle Lee, Naked NYC

According to a recent study, baby boomers are now adopting social networking applications at a significantly faster pace than Gen Y, as highlighted here.

While Gen Y adoption of these tools has increased slightly (by 2%), baby boomers have connected at a much greater rate. There was a 59% increase in adoption for those in their 50s and 60s between last year and this year - 30 times that of their younger counterparts.

And with more and more baby boomers adopting social media and especially Twitter the lines between inner, outer and far outer social circles is quickly blurring.

So in the past where you might have shown one side of yourself to your Mom, another side to your friends and yet another to your work colleagues, with all these worlds colliding, these sides or dimensions are all melding together. Your Mom is probably learning things about you that she never knew before – scary.

Often we talk about brands having different sides to their personality. They might act one way with their consumers, another way with their customers, and yet another with their suppliers. But as they too begin to embrace social networking platforms it will be intriguing to see how they weave together all the nuances to reveal their overall character. Technology may force these brands to step back and see the full picture – which suggests an exciting new landscape for brands to reveal new, unknown facets to their character.
